justices have to agree to take up a case. pete williams joining us live now by telephone from inside the supreme court building. pete, first of all, what what are the separate issues here that the justices could be taking a look at? >> well, there are two and it seems the most likely if the court will take any of these cases is a challenge to a federal law called the defense of marriage act passed by congress in 1996, signed by president clinton. and it says if a couple a legally married under state law, one of the nine states that now or soon will grant the right for same-sex couples to get married, those marriages are not recognized under federal law and as a practical matter, that deprives those couples of about 1,000 federal benefits. that law has been challenged by lawsuits in several states. if seems pretty likely the court will take that case because it'sen validating an act of congress. so it seems pretty likely that the court will take that or we could find that out this afternoon. now, the other big thing we're watching is the challenge to california's proposition 8, the vo

. joining me now is chris geidner. the man who knows the supreme court inside and out, pete williams. pete, good to have you with us. break it down. which cases are we talking about, and how quickly might we find out whether they will move forward? >> reporter: well, if they're going to take any of these cases, thomas, it's very likely we'll find out this afternoon. and i think the most likely event here is that they will grant one of the cases that challenges the federal defense of marriage act. passed in 1966 by congress signed by president clinton, it defines marriage as for federal law purposes as only the legal union of one man and one woman. now, the practical effect of that is that in the nine states that now grant or soon will grant same-sex couples the legal right to get married, those couples are legally married under state law, but the federal government doesn't recognize their marriage, which means that they can't get survivors' benefits, they don't get tax benefits, they don't get social security benefits. about 1,000 benefits in all that are the result of this federal law tha
that could ultimately define marriage under federal law. william la jeunesse following this story out of los angeles now. william, what's happening today? good morning. >> reporter: well is the federal law that defines marriage as a union of a man and woman constitutional? the nine justices today will decide if they want to take that case up this spring. now there are 10 pending cases involving gay rights before the court. eight involve challenges to the defense of marriage act known as doma. it bars the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, and, it says one state does not have to recognize the same-sex marriage of another state. it was signed into law in 1996 but then president clinton, it was passed by large majorities in both houses including large margins of democrats. president obama was before the law before he was against it. but now the administration is pushing the supreme court bill to overturn doma as well. already two lower courts said the clause that bars same sex spouses from receiving federal benefits like social security, survivor benefits, insurance, violat
plan to stage a massive demonstration tomorrow. holly williams is in cairo and has been watching this whole crisis unfold. >> reporter: a week after president mohamed morsi gave himself broad new powers that some egyptians say make him a dictator in all but name his islamist allies have rushed to finish a final draft of the country's constitution. it could now be put to a referendum before the end of the year. protests and violent clashes in cities across egypt, president morsi defended his power grab last night on egyptian state tv. he said his new authority is needed to guide egypt through its democratic transition and that he will give up his expanded powers once the country has a new constitution. a final draft of the constitution is now complete, written and voted on by a panel dominated by president's morsi's political allies, neither all of them islamists. the constitution gives islamic sharia law a more specific role in government and doesn't guarantee women's equality. it also empowers the state to defend morals and values. critics like human rights lawyer say that could
